Meeting Street's Bright Futures
Three days after he was born, Kyle developed spinal meningitis, a crippling disease that has left him paralyzed.
When Kyle was three, he was enrolled in Meeting Street. He was completely nonverbal and would get so frustrated trying to communicate that silent tears would stream down his little face.
During those difficult days, Kyle couldn’t feed himself. One day when he was four years old, his mother, Nelli, recalls she came to the school at lunch time and there was her son calmly feeding himself and drinking independently from a cup just like his classmates.
She was so proud that when people came to the house, she gave Kyle something to drink so she could show off her son’s accomplishment.
Kyle is now 17 years old and uses a wheelchair, but he is determined not to be defined by his disabilities. Now he not only talks, but he is bilingual in English and Portuguese and even serves as an interpreter for his grandmother.
He loves people and competes regularly in wheelchair races and softball throw competitions. Recently he raced to the sound of cheering crowds at the Annual CVS / pharmacy Downtown 5K in Providence. At the Meeting Street prom last spring, he danced the entire evening, surrounded by a flock of female admirers.
As a high school student at Meeting Street, Kyle is gaining practical skills and experience working at various job sites run by companies that partner with us to help our students.
Kyle is becoming more independent and that is the primary goal of Meeting Street...to help our students achieve their maximum potential and highest quality of life.
